Why Sleepy Hollow Works So Well, and Gotham Doesn’t Work at All

The fantasy detective genre has become an increasingly popular one on network television. To succeed, these shows must effectively combine the generally serious tone of the cop show with elements of fantasy or the supernatural, and this can be tricky.

Airing back to back on Monday nights, Fox’s Gotham and Sleepy Hollow are an interesting case study for what it takes to make this kind of series work—or not. In the video above, I attempt to explain why one of these shows succeeds, while the other, so far, utterly fails.
