The World of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin’s sprawling companion guide to his sprawling Game of Thrones universe, is out Oct. 28. Martin recently visited 92Y for a lengthy discussion about the book, and it’s a must-see for fans eager to gain insight into the author’s process and philosophy in crafting such an impeccably rendered world.

Host Laura Miller aptly compares World of Ice and Fire to The Silmarillion, Tolkien’s tome on the history and lore of Middle-earth. Martin and his co-writers—Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson, creators of the renowned fansite Westeros.org—took an even more lavish approach, supplementing an extensive text with detailed map illustrations, full breakdowns of family genealogies, and sidebar explorations of Westerosian culture. Martin also notes that, naturally, he wrote way too much for the book, so an even more extensive account of Westerosian royalty is forthcoming. It’s a lovely, discursive discussion, and at the very least it’ll burn an hour or two of your time as you brave the interminable wait for The Winds of Winter.
