Avengers: Age of Ultron Looks Like a Fun, Sprawling, and Extremely Satisfying Sequel

Big, bad Ultron.

At long last we have a trailer for what will be the most money-making, fervently discussed blockbuster of summer 2015—Avengers: Age of Ultron. Four films have fleshed out Marvel’s cinematic universe since the first Avengers, but the gang looks as superheroic as ever. The newcomers: Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver, Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch, and the hulking, metallic, monologue-prone supervillain named Ultron.

Delightfully voiced by James Spader, Ultron is, according to director Joss Whedon, “a robot who’s genuinely disturbed.” In more technical terms, he’s an artificial intelligence program embedded with bits of Tony Stark’s personality and a serious God complex. From the trailer, he also seems like an ideal archenemy for the Avengers, and a particularly destructive one: we catch glimpses of widespread chaos, a fight between Hulk and a super-sized Iron Man, and Captain America’s broken shield. It all looks extremely epic, but what made the first Avengers film so good was Whedon’s deft juggling of the large cast and multiple intersecting storylines; Ultron packs in even more characters, which may prove troublesome, and it seems like some of the Avengers will be relegated to supporting roles in order to develop others. We’ll have to wait until May to find out.
