The Evolution of Movie Chase Scenes

Movie audiences have long loved a good chase scene, whatever the mode of transportation. As explored in Jim Casey’s well-executed montage, above, the chase scene dates at least as far back as 1903’s The Great Train Robbery, and has evolved from lynch mobs on horseback (1915’s Birth of a Nation) to jedis on speeder bikes (1983’s Return of the Jedi) to Batman, on his Batpod, flipping over a tractor trailer (2008’s The Dark Knight)—all of which the montage appropriately shows to the same tune (the William Tell Overture) used as the theme for The Lone Ranger.
