Watch Jack White’s Stunning Take Away Show

Since 2006, French music site La Blogothèque’s high-concept, cinematic Take Away Shows shot at various French locales—including one filmed at Versailles with a drone—have raised the bar for live performance videos. And, in June, the site brought together Jack White and director Colin Solal Cardo at the historic Château de Fontainebleau for a show where White performed a pair of songs both inside the magnificent Saint-Saturnin Chapel and on its roof.

In what looks to be its main hall, White and his band play a stirring version of “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known,” a song from The White Stripes’ third album, in which the room’s acoustics echo White’s voice throughout the chapel—an effect that transforms the song’s folk-sung style into a gospel-sounding hymn. White and his violinist move from there to the chapel’s roof for a duet of “Entitlement” (off his new solo album) that, with the palace’s gargantuan landscape surrounding them, brings even greater meaning to the line, “They live like kings and nobody cares.” This is Jack White completely in his element, and it’s a treat to watch.
