If you’re a fan of New York City’s music scene in the early aughts—when two local bands, the Strokes and Interpol, spurred an indie rock revival with massively acclaimed debut albums—this year has been something of a miniature renaissance. The Strokes played their first gig in three years in May, and now Interpol has released a new single, “All the Rage Back Home,” which is perhaps one of the best songs of the summer.
The single is in many ways a return to form after the band’s scattershot 2010 album, Interpol. It has the group’s trademark sounds—Paul Bank’s doleful vocals and some layered, intertwining guitar work—but it’s a tad more upbeat than the classics on Turn On The Bright Lights, though no less satisfying. Sadly absent on the track is Carlos Dengler, the band’s former bassist, whose melodic riffs served as a perfect counterpoint to the band’s ambient soundscapes. The song is off Interpol’s forthcoming album, El Pintor, which will be released in September.
