Spoon Offers a Late and Unexpected Contender for Song of the Summer

“Someone get popsicles, someone do something ’bout this heat,” sings Britt Daniel on Spoon’s new single. The next line says something about late October, I think, but no matter: With “Do You,” Spoon has delivered a late and unexpected contender for song of the summer. It’s not as danceable as Ariana Grande’s “Problem” or as spasm-inducing as DJ Snake and Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What,” but it’s the perfect tune for a drive with the windows down, when you’re suffering from the first signs of heat exhaustion and the most you can manage is a mild head-bob.

The first official single from the band’s forthcoming album, They Want My Soul, “Do You” offers falsetto “doos” and “woos” as a counterbalance to the weighty questions infectiously asked in the chorus: “Do you wanna get understood? … Do you run when it’s just getting good?” It’s more of a pop-rock ditty than “Rent I Pay,” which the band released last month, and breezier than “Rainy Taxi,” which they performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live last week. The album, their first since 2010’s Transference and eighth in 20 years, comes out on Aug. 5.
