The last time we saw Kristen Wiig’s lip-synching chops was in the final scene of 2011’s Bridesmaids, opposite Maya Rudolph. She breaks them out again for The Skeleton Twins, a dramedy in which she co-stars alongside another formerSaturday Night Live castmate, Bill Hader, and the results, judging from the film’s new trailer, are delightful.
In the film, Hader and Wiig play Milo and Maggie, an estranged brother and sister who reunite after each commits an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Maggie’s struggling with her stale marriage to fratty, flannel-wearing Lance (Luke Wilson), while Milo’s haunted by a complicated relationship with an ex-lover (Ty Burrell) and a failed acting career.
While the trailer has its funny moments—not least of which is the epic lip-synch duet to Starship’s “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”—the film is a more dramatic turn for both leads, especially Hader, who is perhaps still best known for his recurring SNL role as beloved club-goer Stefon. (Wiig starred in the 2013 Alice Munro adaptation Hateship Loveship, which met with mixed reviews.)
The Skeleton Twins won a screenwriting award at Sundance, and the material is brought to life by a chemistry—apparent even in the brief trailer—built on years of comedic collaboration. The movie hits theaters on Sept. 19.
