Sir Mix-A-Lot Performed “Baby Got Back” With the Seattle Symphony Orchestra

Not your usual orchestra concert.

Sir Mix-A-Lot is almost 50, but his iconic hit, “Baby Got Back,” never gets old. The rapper recently performed a particularly rousing rendition of the song, with the help of a particularly unusual backing band: the Seattle Symphony Orchestra.

Mix-a-Lot is from Seattle, and the collaboration was part of the Symphony’s Sonic Evolution event, which celebrated the city’s rich musical legacy with various symphonic compositions. The “Baby Got Back” orchestral score was composed by Gabriel Prokofiev, who said his interpretation was written “to really get inside the musical mind of Sir Mix-A-Lot; to understand how his rhythms, textures, sounds and harmonies work, and then to create a contemporary orchestral composition that is true to the music of Sir Mix-A-Lot.” Mission accomplished, I’d say.
