A little over a week ago, Gordon Willis died. Willis was the legendary cinematographer of such classics as The Godfather and Manhattan, and an artist who almost singlehandedly altered the visual language of American cinema.
Nelson Carvajal of Press Play did a taut, insightful montage of Willis’ work, highlighting the cinematographer’s mastery of composition and lighting. Willis’ expertise with the latter was especially renowned: he had a penchant for low-lit, painterly scenes, a characteristic that led some to call him the “Prince of Darkness.”
