“Fancy,” the thumping Iggy Azelea-Charli XCX single that currently sits at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, is being bandied about as a serious contender for the all-important “Song of the Summer” title. But some people, myself included, appreciate (or, at most tolerate) the song due to factors almost completely devoid of Azalea’s contributions: namely, Charli XCX’s undeniably catchy hook and the accompanying nostalgia-fueled video-homage to Clueless.
Now we have solid proof that when you take Azalea out of the equation, the song is greatly improved. The consistently good pop music interpreters Postmodern Jukebox have jazzed-up the track, ’20s-style, and replaced the nasally, faux-Southern accent of the Australian rapper with the more pleasant vocals of Ashley Stroud. The lyrics are still incredibly silly and Charli XCX is gone, but this is by far a superior version. (Plus, there’s a tap dance break!)
