This Animated Mixtape Is Not Quite Like Anything We’ve Seen Before

Back in the early days of the MP3-powered renaissance of the mashup—back before Girl Talk and The Grey Album and all their imitators—Soulwax were mashup kings. In 2002, the New York Times named the Belgian duo’s album-length mixtape As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2 (released under the name 2 Many DJ’s) the best album of the year, and many other critics agreed.

Now, more than a decade later, Soulwax have released the perfect video to go along with it: A mesmerizing animated mashup of all the album art that goes with those 114 songs. Sly and the Family Stone are animated to actually “Dance to the Music,” for example. And when—in what Pitchfork rightly singles out as the best example of the seamless, frequently funny transitions—Peaches’ “Fuck the Pain Away” meets the Velvet Underground’s “I’m Waiting for the Man,” the iconic Velvet Underground banana emerges from the shorts (to put it politely) on the cover of The Teaches of Peaches. If you didn’t quite follow that, don’t worry: Just throw it on at home or at a party. The mix is so eclectic it’s hard to imagine anyone who couldn’t find something to like.
