Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler Make Fun of Rom-Coms in They Came Together

At the beginning of the trailer for They Came Together, released today over at BuzzFeed, a couple is asked for the proverbial how-you-met spiel. The answer? "Kind of a corny, romantic comedy kinda story." That pretty much sums it up. Summer always brings a host of sugar-sweet romance films, but this time around there will be a surprise contender simulating and skewering them all. They Came Together, directed by David Wain, aims to satirize the popular genre with the tale of company man Joel (Paul Rudd), whose corporation threatens to shut down a local candy store owned by Molly (Amy Poehler).

That description, of course, is only the nominal premise: the real point of the film is parodying as many rom-com tropes as possible, from the love-at-first-sight meeting to the "other woman" with suspect motives. All in all, it looks like harmless (and hopefully funny) satire, and it's tough for any movie with Poehler and Rudd to fail completely. Catch it in theaters June 27.
