Joss Whedon surprised his fans last night when he announced that he was releasing his new movie immediately, via streaming video service Vimeo. (You can rent the movie for $5 using the player below.) The Avengers director and Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator made the announcement via a video message shown at the movie’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, noting that he was excited “to explore yet another new form of distribution.”

The movie, written and executive produced by Whedon and directed by relative newcomer Brin Hill, is a supernatural romance about two strangers (Ruby Sparks’ Zoe Kazan and Cloverfield’s Michael Stahl-David) who discover they are psychically connected. We’ll have a review from Slate movie critic Dana Stevens shortly, but if you can’t wait you can watch the first three minutes or just skip straight to renting the movie below.
