Yesterday, in a nice little tribute to Record Store Day, legendary alt-rock band Pixies released a special edition of their first album in 23 years, Indie Cindy. The record itself is no revelation—it's mostly a compilation of cuts from the band's most recent EPs—but the Record Store Day edition came with a previously-unheard vinyl single, "Women of War."
The song, like most of the band's recent output, doesn't come near the classic material of Surfer Rosa or Doolittle, but fans should be more than satisfied. We get all the staples of a Pixies song: Black Francis's plaintive and off-kilter vocals, Joey Santiago's wailing punk-rock guitar work, and the band's soft-loud dynamic shifts, all wrapped around a head-bopping refrain: "be my soldier lover/and I'll be your peaceful dove." If you dig it, be sure to grab the album, which will get a full release April 28.
