Watch the Trailer for James Gandolfini’s Final Movie, The Drop

The last feature that James Gandolfini shot before he died last June was The Drop (formerly known as Animal Rescue), and Fox Searchlight has just released our first look at the film. It’s a seriously gloomy trailer, all dimly-lit bars and Brooklyn back alleys. Directed by Michaël Roskam and written by Dennis Lehane, who wrote the novels Mystic River, Gone, Baby, Gone, and Shutter Island—all adapted for the screen—The Drop’s title refers to the Brooklyn “drop bars” that “hide the entire city’s dirty money right in plain sight.”

Tom Hardy plays bartender Bob Saginowski, whose uncle, Marv (Gandolfini), used to be a notorious gangster. The drama centers on a botched robbery and, apparently, a pit bull puppy, which the trailer zeroes in on enough times to make me seriously worried about this puppy’s future. Co-starring Matthias Schoenaerts and Noomi Rapace, The Drop hits theaters on Sept. 19.
