The Evolution of the Movie Camera, From Lumière to Google Glass

In most montages and supercuts about the history of the movies, the camera remains behind the scenes. But for this year’s Lifetime Achievement Awards ceremony held by the Society of Camera Operators, editor Bob Joyce created a video that renders the camera, and the people behind it, completely visible.

The Motion Picture Camera—Past, Present, and Future,” is a sweeping homage to over a century’s-worth of honing, experimenting, and perfecting the art of the moving image camera. Featuring a collage of film clips and behind-the-scenes footage and stills, Joyce covers a number of filmmaking innovations, from Panavision to IMAX to digital filmmaking to even Google Glass. If you’re a cinephile and will never grow tired of John Murphy’s “Sunshine (Adagio in D Major),” the montage is worth a look.
