Wes Anderson’s Movies Are Even More Obsessively Symmetrical Than You Realized

Wes Anderson fans already know that the writer-director favors symmetrical compositions—“Symmetrical Framing” is one of the first squares we added to the Wes Anderson Bingo board. But this nifty video from Kogonada—who specializes in videos about directors’ tics and signatures—shows that Anderson is even more meticulous than you might have realized. Even characters’ noses are lined up dead down the middle.

Before detractors use this to write Anderson off—and I’m sure that many will be tempted—they should remember that a lot of visual flair can still be expressed using this centered style. Just look at all the centered shots of Stanley Kubrick.
