Steven Soderbergh Combines Hitchcock’s Psycho With Gus Van Sant’s, to Eerie Results

Gus Van Sant’s 1998 shot-for-shot remake of Psycho always seemed wildly unnecessary—upon its release, Roger Ebert, noting an added scene, called it “masturbatory.” But Van Sant’s widely-panned film—which has received some revisionist appreciation of late—has prompted a new and curious experiment courtesy of Steven Soderbergh: Psychos.

On his website, extension765.com, the “retired” film director has posted a mash-up of Alfred Hitchcock’s original thriller and the remake, cutting between mostly black and white shots of both films in feature-length form. The page appears to be down at the moment, but below is a glimpse of one of the highlights: the signature shower scene, in which Soderbergh provides a trippy, avant-garde take on Marion Crane (Janet Leigh and Ann Heche) meeting her demise.
