Watch Chris Farley Perform as Matt Foley Before He Joined SNL

The video above was uploaded to YouTube by Second City yesterday. In it, Chris Farley performs as Matt Foley, motivational speaker, a character he created with Bob Odenkirk (now known to the wider world as Saul Goodman). Odenkirk, who was already writing for Saturday Night Live, also appears in the sketch, along with Tim Meadows, Jill Talley, Holly Wortell, and David Pasquesi. It was taped on July 26, 1990, not long after Farley was announced as a new cast member on SNL. Matt Foley wouldn’t appear on that show until 1993, but devoted Chris Farley fans will recognize that, when he did, this skit was imported nearly verbatim.

Of course, in the SNL version, Farley fell down and broke a table, getting additional laughs (a gag he repeated in later appearances as Foley). If you’ve read the oral biography The Chris Farley Show, the absence of that pratfall may feel particularly bittersweet.
