He’s done stand-up, written for and starred in great TV sitcoms, and is a pretty good rapper, too. But Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, has another talent: singing. He recently recorded a cover of the early ‘90s R&B hit “I’d Die Without You,” by P.M. Dawn, for BBC Radio 1, and it is surprisingly good.
There are no excessive riffs or belts here, just a solid, controlled sound that stands in fairly stark contrast to much of his musical oeuvre thus far. Aside from fleeting, heavily-produced hooks on songs like “Heartbeat” and “V. 3005,” Childish Gambino has mainly presented himself as a rapper, but perhaps he should follow Drake’s lead and incorporate more singing into his raps. Or better yet, just put out an entire R&B album?
