2013 was a great year for Daft Punk, Nile Rodgers, and Pharrell: With “Get Lucky,” they created an inescapable dance hit that seemed to cut across all ages and musical tastes, inspiring countless covers, remixes, and parodies. And while other similarly viral pop songs came packaged with controversy—ahem, “Blurred Lines,” “We Can’t Stop“—the ‘70s throwback was a guilt-free track for all to enjoy. It’s easy to see (or, rather, hear) how it became such a sensation.
Over at Stereogum, Scott Lapatine, with help from Matt Neatock, put together this video to demonstrate just how big a part of pop culture the song was this year. Part supercut, part retrospective, it covers everything from the lovely to the bizzare to the humorous (and even the pretty bad).
It may have failed to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, but that shouldn’t stop us from raising our cups to the year of “Get Lucky.”
