Season 3 of Girls got shaken up a bit when Christopher Abbott (Charlie) “abruptly” quit the show. The reported reason was that Abbott “didn’t like the direction things are going in.” While we may never show exactly what the show was planning for his character, there’s not much fans of the show could get upset about in the trailer for Girls Season 3, which shows the fairly logical directions each of the characters are headed in at the start of the next season.

The reported reason was that Abbott “didn’t like the direction things are going in.” While we may never show exactly what the show was planning for his character, there’s not much fans of the show could get upset about in the trailer for Girls Season 3, which shows the fairly logical directions each of the characters are headed in at the start of the next season.
It flashes by fast, but here’s the gist. The ever-anxious Marnie, having lost Charlie, is working hard to try to forget the breakup. Shoshanna and Ray (who by now has joined Adam as a regular Girl) are still broken up, but there’s lingering romantic tension. The most stable relationship, for now, seems to be Adam and Hannah’s. The fact that they’re moving furniture makes me wonder whether they’ll be moving in together.
On-again, off-again romances like these can become tiresome as shows stretch into more and more seasons. (It may be a blessing in disguise that the show lost half of Charlie and Marnie, the show’s first Ross and Rachel.) But it seems fair to expect that the show will also let these adventurous women grow on their own: Each of the girls seems to have a new job, and Hannah is as neurotic as ever, even if she has found “the keys to the prison that is [her] mind.”
Even without any shockers here, I can’t wait for the next season. The show has always encouraged a love-hate relationship with its characters, but I miss my “fat-free muffin of sociopathic detachment.”
