Following in the old-school steps of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella and the Mary Martin version of Peter Pan, NBC is airing a live version of The Sound of Music one time only, on Dec. 5. Country star Carrie Underwood will step into the role of Maria, while True Blood star Stephen Moyer will portray Captain Von Trapp.
The new trailer makes it clear that NBC is intent on distinguishing their show from the iconic film version starring Julie Andrews that everyone thinks of whenever someone mentions The Sound of Music. This seems like an insurmountable task—and probably is, thanks to the film’s nearly 50-year legacy—but the live aspect does give the project a little more intrigue than it would have otherwise. And while I have my doubts about Underwood’s casting, I’m definitely looking forward to at least one thing: hearing Audra McDonald, as Mother Abbess, perform a wondrous rendition of “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”
