Martin Scorsese’s New Movie Is Funny, Apparently

Leonardo DiCaprio does Gordon Gekko meets Parker Lewis in Wolf of Wall Street trailer.

The first trailer for The Wolf of Wall Street was, as Forrest Wickman noted here on Brow Beat, “ridiculously entertaining,” and definitely had moments of levity. But it gave the impression that the true-life financial-crime saga set in the 1980s was basically Goodfellas on Wall Street.

This new trailer suggests that Scorsese is going for something decidedly funnier: From Jonah Hill’s ridiculous teeth to Rob Reiner’s appearance as DiCaprio’s father, this movie looks to be something of a comedy, albeit a dark one. Also, the similarities you may spot between this story and Boiler Room are not coincidental; as Matt Singer notes at the Dissolve, the story of Jordan Belfort, whom DiCaprio plays here, was “reputedly the prototype” for that other movie.

This one looks better, though. It will be out on Christmas.
