Banksy’s New York Project Took a Very Brooklyn Turn Today

This beaver may be cute, but his neighborhood … not so much.

The pseudonymous artist Banksy is currently doing a monthlong “residency” in New York City, which he has titled “Better Out Than In.” The project took an interesting turn today.

His latest installation centers around a street sign snapped at the base, its pole helplessly on the ground with its concrete and dirt foundation piled neatly below it. The culprit? An adorable beaver, thanks to Banksy’s off-kilter imagination.

See what he did there?

But this Beaver’s neighborhood isn’t so adorable. It’s the East New York section of Brooklyn. And when local residents caught wind of their newest neighbor—drawn, presumably, by the droves of strangers getting off the train to stare at a wall—they saw an opportunity for a come-up.

Want a peek? Dig in your pockets. The irony is beautiful. And so is Brooklyn.
