Someday Hollywood Aging Effects Will Be This Good

Typically, when Hollywood tries to make an actor look younger or older, the result ranges from almost right to totally preposterous. (Just check out the “young” Stallone in the Grudge Match trailer, for instance.) But this short film by Anthony Cerniello suggests what might be possible.

Granted, his methods were nothing like the usual Hollywood approach of makeup and/or a bit of CGI. They were far more elaborate. “Cerniello traveled to his friend Danielle’s family reunion and with still photographer Keith Sirchio shot portraits of her youngest cousins through to her oldest relatives,” the art blog Colossal explains. Then he scanned each photo and “carefully edited the photos to select the family members that had the most similar bone structure. Next he brought on animators Nathan Meier and Edmund Earle … to morph and animate the still photos to make them lifelike as possible.” And one more collaborator, George Cuddy, used additional effects “to smooth out some small details like the eyes and hair.”

The result requires patience, but is fairly stunning. Give it time.
