Nine Inch Nails’ new album Hesitation Marks comes out in two weeks, and the group has been quick to share a number of tracks from the album. First Trent Reznor and co. returned with “Came Back Haunted” and mused on the postmodern condition with “Copy of A.” Both songs sounded like updates on the kind of glitchy industrial rock we’re used to from the band, but new tracks “Find My Way” and “Everything” are a little different.
“Find My Way” is easily the more familiar of the two, with Reznor singing about feeling lost and alone (“Now that you’ve gone away/ I’m just tryin’ to find my way”) over a shuffling electronic beat and some melancholy piano reminiscent of his score for The Social Network.
“Everything,” on the other hand, while still noisy, is perhaps the most upbeat, pop-punk track NIN has ever done, with Reznor singing, “I am home, I believe/ I am home, I am free,” and, perhaps most appropriately, “I’ve become something else.”
It’s a bit of a shock at first, and at least one fan has reacted in spectacularly sarcastic fashion, creating a video for the “brutal new song” that features puppies, skipping, and My Little Pony. I like the original song, as out-of-character as it is, but I like this video even better:
