Fiona Apple’s “Hot Knife,” the closing track from last year’s great The Idler Wheel…, gathers its intensity from its slow build. So it makes sense that frequent collaborator and former boyfriend Paul Thomas Anderson, who’s directed a few of her videos in the past, decided to strip it down to the intensity of her performance, allowing all the song’s parts to slowly assemble in split screen.
The resulting video is a perfect match for the song, and it’s every bit as transfixing.
