This Might Be the Perfect Olivier Assayas Movie

My favorite movie by Olivier Assayas is Late August, Early September, in which several friends awkwardly adjusting to adulthood in various ways are brought together by the death of someone they know. (SPIN called it “the French Big Chill, but smarter, better-looking, better.”) Other Assayas fans prefer Carlos, his three-part miniseries about Carlos the Jackal, a Marxist-Leninist terrorist who rose to notoriety in the 1970s (he is currently serving life in prison for murder).

Assayas’ latest film, Something in the Air, looks at both the rise of revolutionary politics in the late ’60s and the divergent destinies of a group of friends. This trailer makes it seem like the perfect Assayas film.

It will come to theaters in the U.S. in May.
