Monsters University Looks Surprisingly Good

The first full-length trailer for Monsters University has been released after months of teasing, finally giving us a glimpse of the origin story for the beloved scaring duo, Mike and Sully. The two are seen immersed in campus life, with the trailer showing “The Introduction” of the monsters to one another as roommates and “The Rivalry” that ensues (“I’m gonna wipe the floor with that little know-it-all,” Sully vows). It’s the latter that apparently serves as the central conflict in this prequel to Monsters, Inc. as Mike and Sully’s competition leads to them getting kicked out of school. The only way to be re-admitted to the program is to win the GreekScare Games.

All of which may sound a bit conventional, but from the ’80s metal soundtrack—“Kickstart My Heart” by Mötley Crüe—to the goofy hijinks (“I can’t go back to jail!” one monster exclaims when they are caught trespassing), Monsters University looks like a fun, exuberant film—one that could surprise those skeptical of Pixar’s latest venture into the business of sequels and prequels. For those who want to know even more about it, director Dan Scanlon offers a preview of the movie, providing more details about the characters’ development and the premise, in the video below.
