It was a night of surprises at the Golden Globes. After just its first season, Lena Dunham’s Girls won best TV comedy. Though she’s perhaps known primarily for her writing and directing, Dunham also won best actress in a TV comedy, beating out hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. To close out the night, Argo won Best Motion Picture – Drama, shortly after Ben Affleck beat out Steven Spielberg and others for best director.
Argo’s big win comes as a strong reminder that the Globes are not a good predictor of who will win at the Oscars. Argo remains a long shot for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, where Affleck isn’t even nominated for Best Director. (In the last 80 years, only one film was won Best Picture without being nominated for best director.)
Les Misérables won Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, along with expected awards for best actor in a comedy or musical (Hugh Jackman) and best supporting actress (Anne Hathaway). Homeland won Best Television Series – Drama, while Game Change dominated the category of best TV mini-series or movie.
Other surprises included Jodie Foster’s sort-of-coming-out speech, given in cagey fashion, and the appearance of Bill Clinton, to introduce Lincoln. Less surprising was the winning performance of the show’s hosts, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who were among the funniest and most charming emcees in recent memory. After Clinton’s appearance, Poehler gushed, “That was Hillary Clinton’s husband!”
