The New Shyamalan Trailer Has a Twist Ending

Will Smith in the new trailer for After Earth

M. Night Shyamalan is known for his twist endings, of course, so it is perhaps unsurprising that the international trailer for his next movie, After Earth, has a twist ending of its own. Can you guess what it is? (And no, Will Smith doesn’t see dead people.)

Once you learn that initial twist to After Earth, another question might occur to you: Can Shyamalan extend his incredible streak of getting worse reviews for each movie he makes? It is hard to predict after watching just these two minutes of footage—though Will Smith’s accent (southern? Valleysmen?) sounds like trouble. And casting the star together with his son Jaden does give the film, perhaps unfairly, the look of a vanity project.

Still, reviews can’t get much worse than they were for The Last Airbender. And whether you’re one of the few still holding a candle for the director, or whether you think he’s always been less an auteur than a marketing plan, it should be fun to see whether he finally makes a comeback.
