Did You See This? The Long Lost Lunar Landing

Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin on the moon.

Last Friday marked the anniversary of the first manned moon landing on July 20, 1969, and today, via BoingBoing, we present the Apollo 11 spaceflight’s long lost audio and footage of that history-making event.

As you might expect, the astronauts—who include Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin—are pretty goddamn excited about their discovery. Everyone knows Neil Armstrong’s historic declaration “The eagle has landed,” but few know the statement that followed: “We are on the fucking moon.”

And it’s not just the astronauts that are awed by the moment. Houston, understandably, cannot believe it either: “Roger, Tranquility. We copy that. We cannot believe you are on the fucking moon. Repeat. Cannot fucking believe it.”

(The video is, yes, fake, though I imagine that it captures what landing on the moon must have felt like. You can get the real audio and transcript from NASA’s website.)

Update, July 23, 2012: Slate’s Jeremy Stahl has pointed out to me that this video comes by way of The Onion. Here is a version of the video from the Onion News Network.
