Hipsters Guess What the Higgs Boson Is

A still from “What Is the Higgs Boson?” from MotherboardTV

Hipsters may have become the most mocked demographic there is. Surely an impassioned defense of oversized sunglasses, manicured mustaches, and saucer-sized earrings is overdue. For now, though, we can’t help grinning at this video of Brooklynites trying to guess what, exactly, the Higgs Boson is.

In case you, too, missed the news: On July 4, researchers in Geneva announced they’d discovered the mysterious Higgs Boson, or “God,” particle. The tiny cosmic building block is thought to lend mass to the rest of the universe. Or maybe it’s an animal, a building, a concert venue, or “a creepy European man who goes around flashing people.”

Other guesses include an art installation and a metal band. One girl suggests that it “sounds brown.” A youth who perhaps knows of what he speaks says that the name sounds like magic—“and by magic, I mean drugs.”

Our favorite? The Beat-looking guy who wrote the particle a poem, but can’t remember how it went.
