Does Groupon Want to Name Your Baby?

A screen shot from popular group deals site Groupon

Either someone has hacked the popular group deals website Groupon, or its business plan has taken a turn for the bizarre. One of this weekend’s deals for New York City is the opportunity to have Groupon name your baby for a cool thousand dollars. What would Groupon name your baby? Happily, the coupon is explicit about this:

Groupon, the official World’s Foremost Authority in Baby Naming™, will name your child or children “Clembough”. No substitutes or modifications. Spelling non-negotiable. Any attempt to name your child “Clembough” independent of this exclusive Groupon will be recognized by the world as a cheap imitation.

Brow Beat has been unable thus far to ascertain what in the world is going on. But we will update this post as soon as we know.

Note: This might be a good time to change your Groupon password.

Update: Business Insider speculates fairly convincingly that this is a Groupon PR stunt timed to Father’s Day.

Second update: Groupon’s PR agency informs us that this is a “real deal” and that the site has not been hacked. For now, at least, Groupon itself will not be commenting further on the matter.
