Did You See This? Hologram Tupac, You’re Our Only Hope

A still from “R2-D2’s Other Message”

Now this is the droid mashup you’ve been looking for: Hologram Tupac (which, to get technical, was actually a 2D image) has arrived with a message for Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, by way of R2-D2.

The mashup seems inevitable in retrospect, with everyone from College Humor to @Kanye having made the connection (@Kanye is only a parody account, though it seems to have tricked plenty of onlookers), and Hologram Tupac has taken on a life of his own, quickly becoming a full-blown meme. He’s even exploring the possibility of going on tour. And while all this may seem profane to some, others have pointed out that it is a natural progression for the late rapper’s estate, which has recycled Tupac’s work ceaselessly since he died. Just like Star Wars, Tupac has been forced to do a lot of dancing on his own grave.

But that doesn’t make the result any less great. The Star Wars universe was never a very colorful one, especially in the original trilogy, and the comedy arises from Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi trying to figure out what exactly to make of the Thug Life. If it fizzles out at the end, I’m willing to overlook that on the strength of those first couple of exchanges.
