Is there anything still sacred in the Star Wars universe? If you’re still clinging to some hope that the answer is yes, maybe it’s time to let go. Via Kottke comes this new video of the wonderfully irreverent Xbox game Kinect Star Wars, arriving in stores tomorrow. In the game, players can cross lightsabers with the fiercest of the Sith—or boogie down with all the Force they’ve got in the game’s dance mode, featuring Star Wars remakes of popular songs.
Dancing Han Solo has Star Wars fanboys across the planet outraged. As one YouTube commenter put it: “I just felt the death of Star Wars. It was as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.” But who said that Star Wars wasn’t already thoroughly ruined? To take just one example, the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special aired way back in 1978. At this point, Star Wars has died more deaths than the many clones of Jango Fett; there’s nothing left to do but dance on the franchise’s grave.
And dancing Han Solo does that perfectly. It would be impossible to enumerate all the finer points of this video here—don’t miss the names of the dance moves, which include the “Chewie Hug” and, our personal favorite, the “Trash Compactor.”’ But for those still trapped in the carbonite of protective Star Wars fandom, the lyrics make the perfect sendoff: “I’m so happy the carbonite is gone / I’m movin’ on / I’m so happy that it’s over now. / The pain is gone.”
