This afternoon, a Florida jury found Casey Anthony not guilty of murdering her two-year-old daughter, Caylee, in 2008. She was also found not guilty of the two other major charges she faced: aggravated child abuse and aggravated manslaughter. (She was, however, convicted of the lowest charge she faced, that of providing false information to the police.)
The stunning acquittal of the young woman who’s been a fixture of cable news for the past few years led to big spikes in Web traffic, as users searched for breaking news and took to social media sites to register their outrage.
Perhaps due to the fact that the trial has been so media-saturated all along, the Twitter hive mind has come up with a ghoulishly meta way of redressing what some see as a terrible breach of justice: Send Dexter Morgan, the killer who only targets other killers, after Anthony. According to Trendistic, #Dexter–which is currently a trending topic on Twitter, as “Dexter Morgan”–first started getting associated with Casey Anthony around 2 p.m. EST, right around the time the verdict was announced.
