The nominees for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards were announced today at 8:30 am ET, in a ceremony co-hosted by last year’s best supporting actress, Mo’Nique.
The King’s Speech

despite its
historical inaccuracies

had a big morning, leading the pack with 12 nominations.
True Grit
surprised with 10, and
Inception
and
The Social Network
followed with eight apiece.
There were no huge snubs this year, but a few hotly tipped performances didn’t make the cut, particularly in the supporting actor and actress categories: The Social Network ‘s Andrew Garfield, Black Swan ‘s Mila Kunis, and Another Year ‘s Lesley Manville all missed out.
Michelle Williams got a surprise best actress nomination for Blue Valentine , but her co-star Ryan Gosling couldn’t elbow his way into a crowded best actor field. Along with the three predicted shoe-ins in that category — James Franco ( 127 Hours ), Jesse Eisenberg ( The Social Network ), and man-to-beat Colin Firth ( The King’s Speech ) — Jeff Bridges and Javier Bardem got nods for True Grit and Biutiful . In his post-announcement analysis , Entertainment Weekly ‘s Dave Karger noted that Bardem is the first actor to be nominated in this category for a performance conducted entirely in Spanish.
At least eight of the Best Picture nominees
have been considered locks for some time
now. The final two slots went to
127 Hours
and
Winter’s Bone

.
Filmmakers who are
running around Park City today
may be cheered to know that Debra Granik’s 2010 Sundance hit, the Ozark drama
Winter’s Bone
, got four big nominations: Not just the expected Best Actress nod for Jennifer Lawrence, but also best supporting actor for John Hawkes (who played scary-protective uncle Teardrop) and best adapted screenplay.
