Reasons Why Celebrities Don’t Use the Internet

Actress and indie rock muse  Winona Ryder said in the latest issue of ELLE that she doesn’t use the Internet . She also told USA Today that she doesn’t even own a computer . I’m somewhat skeptical of these claims, but Ryder’s not the only celeb who says she never Googles herself or chuckles at cat videos. Here are a bunch of famous people who’ve recently made similar proclamations and their justifications for their Luddism:

Boardwalk Empire’s Paz de La Huerta: Because she’s too classy   and sophisticated
New York Magazine
‘s Party Lines
asked de la Huerta in December if she’d been following the Wikileaks story. “No,” she responded before adding, fairly irrelevantly, “I don’t have a computer. I choose to read books.”

Eminem: Because he’s touchingly self-aware of his own limitations
The rapper told SPIN in August: “Here’s why I don’t know how to work a computer. … If I learn how, I’m going to be on that bitch all day looking at comments about me, and it’s going to drive me crazy.”

Brad Pitt: Because   he still clings to the fantasy that he’s a private person
After Newsweek asked Pitt if he ever Googles himself, Pitt said “Dear God, no.” He went onto explain: “First of all, I don’t really know how to operate a computer. … This publicity machine is out of control. It’s everything we didn’t sign up for. There’s this whole other entity that you get sucked into. You have to go and sell your wares. It’s something I never made my peace with. Somehow you’re not supporting your film if you don’t get on a show and talk about your personal life. It has nothing to do with why I do this.”

Celebrities—they’re just like us! Except they don’t know what that weird thing on your desk is.
