Jonathan Trent studied at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC-San Diego, specializing in extremophiles. He is lead scientist on the OMEGA project at NASA's Ames Research Center in California. This essay is based on a talk he gave at TEDGlobal 2012 and a paper in Biofuels.
