Amy Dru Stanley is a history professor at the University of Chicago, where she works on slavery and emancipation, law, and political economy. She is the author of the prize-winning From Bondage to Contract: Wage Labor, Marriage, and the Market in the Age of Slave Emancipation and her essays have also appeared in the New York Times, the Nation, Dissent Magazine, and Jacobin.
