Make Inishturk Great Again

This tiny Irish island is home to just 58 people. But an unprecedented population explosion may be imminent for the unlikeliest of reasons.

The tiny, remote island of Inishturk, off Ireland’s west coast, was thrust into the global spotlight when an online rumor suggested the town had offered Americans refuge in the event of a Donald Trump presidency. None of Inishturk’s 58 residents can quite say how the rumor began, but once it gained steam, the island’s Facebook page was flooded with serious requests from potential U.S. immigrants.

The situation, as documented in the above short by Mel Films, has been amusing residents quite a bit. While they’re more than happy to welcome a few families into the fold, they’re also understandably a bit worried about what would happen, exactly, if thousands of terrified Americans actually came streaming in looking for refuge in the event of a Hillary Clinton loss in November.

Now that the offer’s out there, this quiet community may actually have to consider the possibility—and figure out what to do about it.

Update, Sept. 15, 2016: This post has been updated to include Mel Films, the distributor of the short.
