Portrait of the Artist as a Young Hamster

A self-portrait drawn by hamster wheel.

With the help of this new invention, Joji the hamster can channel its creative energies into drawing. By running on a tricked-out hamster wheel, this hamster creates a self-portrait, drawing itself in the act of working out.

This invention comes from Neil Mendoza, an artist who uses “digital and mechanical technologies to bring inanimate objects and spaces to life.” Mendoza captured the drawing machine on video. Joji’s movements set off a series of gears, allowing a pencil to draw a basic portrait. We see Joji pause, as if to contemplate the drawing that is unfolding. When he’s satisfied, he makes his exit.

We can only hope that Joji gets his own art exhibit soon.
