In the video above, New York City appears like you’ve never seen it before. It’s real footage of the city, sure, but it’s been processed by Danil Krivoruchko using “neural-style” algorithms—all as a part of the Deep Slow Flow project. The open-source code was written by Manuel Ruder, Alexey Dosovitskiy and Thomas Brox, and the music is “Candles” by Jon Hopkins.
From the opening shot of lower Manhattan looking like fabric draped over frames—or maybe a melting birthday cake is more apt—you know this view of New York is different.
NYC Flow shows the city as a giant, animated impressionist painting. Colors spread like watercolors on top of and into each other, exploding on and around the iconic, real-life locales. Depth is reduced to just two planes, a foreground, and everything behind it flattened into a beautifully complex background.
Once the novelty wears off, you may find yourself simply seeing the rich and alive New York City with fresh eyes.
