3-D printing has opened up a world of possibility for people who need prosthetic limbs, but animals can benefit from the technological breakthrough as well. This video—from Shedd Aquarium in Chicago—documents the story of a Caiman lizard named Hiss Majesty, who may be the first lizard to receive a 3-D–printed prosthetic.
Hiss Majesty (Hiss for short) developed a tumor on his right hind foot which ultimately had to be amputated. Hiss recovered well overall, but his keepers suggested that a prosthetic might help him better resume his daily life, which includes climbing and swimming.
In the video, Hiss tries on a prototype, and, eventually, his keepers slip on the final product. When Hiss hits the ground, he immediately starts walking. It seems like the prosthetic is a great fit.
