Inside the Futuristic Helmet Displays of U.S. Navy Divers

They hail from 3-D printers.

In the video above, the U.S. Navy presents its new Augmented Vision Display for divers. It’s an insertable screen that fits inside a standard diving helmet, so you can take the phrase “heads-up display” quite literally in this case. And perhaps most interestingly, it’s produced on a 3-D printer.

The idea behind the new diving tech is to provide a diver with additional information while a mission is underway. There’s an operator up on the surface feeding images down to the helmet. The display can show text messages, instruction diagrams, photographs, augmented reality videos, and—probably most important—also features a sector sonar that helps the diver move safely and efficiently to target locations.
