A Tasmanian Devil Gets a Tiny Pacemaker

He was very brave.

Sadly, sometimes animals have heart problems just like humans do. In this video from the San Diego Zoo, Nick the Tasmanian devil gets a tiny pacemaker for his tiny heart.

In January, zoo veterinarians discovered that Nick had cardiac conduction disorder, which was causing his heart to beat too slowly. The brave little fellow underwent the surgical procedure to insert his pacemaker at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in San Diego, rested for two weeks, and then was released back into his enclosure. Nick was very calm throughout the whole operation, and seems to have quickly readjusted to his life at the zoo—he was moseying around his cage as usual in no time. Don’t worry, Nick, the shaved patch on your stomach will grow back soon.
