“The Starry Night” Meets Ice Age

Famous movie scenes in the style of iconic works of art.

Scientists at the University of Freiburg have come up with a way to transfer the style of a still image to a video sequence. And using that method, they have, fittingly, focused on doing so with the works of some of the world’s most famous artists. This video about the project shows popular movies animated in the style of some of these artists’ iconic paintings.

Watch as the world of Ice Age is plunged into the landscape of Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night.” Later, a scene from Cloud Atlas takes on the style of a visually similar cloudy mountain landscape. It’s fascinating to see still images turn into paintings in motion—a fitting tribute to iconic cinema and art. For more of these animations, check out the expanded video here.
